The Gospel According to John in the Abbott ePublishing Tyndale21 Version of the Holy Bible (© Copyright 2011 Abbott ePublishing. The only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. 1:19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? 1:20 And he confessed, and did not deny, but said plainly, I am not Christ. 1:21 And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you a prophet? And he answered, No. 1:22 Then they said to him, Who are you, so we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? 1:23 He said, I am the voice of a crier in the desert, Make straight the road of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. 1:24 And those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 1:25 And they asked him, Why do you baptize, then, if you not are not Christ, nor Elijah, neither a prophet? 1:26 John answered, I baptize with water, but one is coming among you, whom you do not know, 1:27 It is he who comes after me who was before me, whose shoelaces I am not worthy to untie. 1:28 These things were done in Bethany beyond Jordan, where John baptized. 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, Look: The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. 1:30 This is he of whom I said, After me a man comes who was before me, because he was higher than I. 1:31 And I did not know him, except that he would be declared to Israel, therefore, I have come baptizing with water. 1:32 And John gave witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 1:33 And I did not know him. But He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, On whom you will see the Spirit descending, and still remain on him, that is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. 1:34 And I saw, and gave witness that this is the Son of God. 1:35 The next day, John stood again, and two of his disciples; 1:36 And he saw Jesus as he walked by, he said, Look! the Lamb of God! 1:37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and followed Jesus. 1:38 Then Jesus turned around, and saw them following, and said to them, What do you seek? They said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master) where do you live? 1:39 He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he lived, and stayed with him that day, because it was about the tenth hour. 1:40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Jesus, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 1:41 He found his brother Simon first, and said to him, We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, anointed, 1:42 And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus saw him, and said, You are Simon the son of Jonah; you will be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, a stone. 1:43 The following day Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and found Philip, and said to him, Follow me. 1:44 Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 1:45 Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the Law, and the Prophets, wrote. Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth,. 1:46 And Nathanael said to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. 1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, Look! A true Israelite, in whom is no deceit! 1:48 Nathanael said to him, From where do you know me? Jesus answered to him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. 1:49 Nathanael answered him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel. 1:50 Jesus answered to him, Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, you believe? You will see greater things than these. 1:51 And he said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, From now on, you will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of Man. 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana, a city in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there, 2:2 And Jesus and his disciples were called to the marriage. 2:3 And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. 2:4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what does your concern have to do with me? My hour has not yet come. 2:5 His mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it. 2:6 And there were six water pots of stone standing there, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, each containing twenty to thirty gallons. 2:7 Jesus said to them, Fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 2:8 And he said to them, Draw out now, and carry them to the governor of the feast. And they carried it. 2:9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water, it was turned into wine, and did not know from where it came (but the servants who drew the water knew) the governor of the feast called the groom, 2:10 And said to him, All men at the beginning set out good wine, and when men have drunk, then that which is worse. But you have held back the good wine until now. 2:11 This beginning of miracles Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and showed his glory and his disciples believed in him. 2:12 After this he descended into Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers, and his disciples, and they continued there not many days. 2:13 And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2:14 And found sitting in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and changers of money, 2:15 And when he had made a whip of small cords, and drove them all out of the temple with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables, 2:16 And said to those who sold doves, Have these things taken away, and do not make my Father's house a house of merchandise. 2:17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of your house has eaten me up. 2:18 Then the Jews said to him, What sign do you show to us, seeing that you do these things? 2:19 Jesus answered to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again. 2:20 Then the Jews said, Forty-six years this temple was being built, and you will raise it up in three days? 2:21 But he spoke of the temple of his body. 2:22 As soon, therefore, as he was risen from death, his disciples remembered that he had said this. And they believed the scripture, and the words that Jesus had said. 2:23 When he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, on the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles he did. 2:24 But Jesus did not put himself in their hands, because he knew all men, 2:25 And did not need any to testify about man, because he knew what was in man. 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler among the Jews, 3:2 Who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. Because no man could do such miracles as you do, unless God is with him. 3:3 Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man be born newly, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 3:4 Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter into his mother's womb and be born again? 3:5 Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 3:7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, You must be born again. 3:8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but cannot tell from where it came, and where it goes. So is everyone that is born of the Spirit. 3:9 Nicodemus answered, How can these things be? 3:10 Jesus answered to him, Are you a master of Israel, and you do not know these things? 3:11 Truly, truly, I say to you, We speak what we know, and testify about what we have seen; and you do not accept our testimony. 3:12 If I when I tell you earthly things, and you do not believe, how would you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 3:13 And no man ascends up to heaven, except he who came down from heaven, that is to say, Son of Man, who is in heaven. 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, even so, the Son of Man must be lifted up. 3:15 That none who believes in him dies, but has eternal life. 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he has given his only Son, that none who believes in him would die, but would have eternal life. 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 3:18 He who believes in him will not be condemned. But he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 3:19 And this is the condemnation: That light has come into the world, and the men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 3:20 For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, in case his deeds would be corrected. 3:21 But he who does truth comes to the light, so his deeds might be known, how they are worked in God. 3:22 After these things Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judaea; and there he remained with them, and baptized. 3:23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon beside Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. 3:24 For John was not yet thrown into prison. 3:25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. 3:26 And they came to John, and said to him, Rabbi, he who was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you gave witness, Look, he baptizes, and all men come to him. 3:27 John said, A man can accept nothing at all, unless it is given to him from heaven. 3:28 You yourselves are witnesses, how I said, I am not Christ, but that I am sent before him. 3:29 He who has the bride is the groom. But the friend of the groom, who stands by and hears him, rejoices greatly at the groom's voice. This, my joy is fulfilled. 3:30 He must increase, and I must decrease. 3:31 He who comes from on high is above all. He who is from the earth is earthly, and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. 3:32 And what he has seen and heard, that, he testifies; but no man accepts his testimony. 3:33 He who has accepted his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. 3:34 Because he whom God has sent speaks the words of God. Because God does not give the Spirit by measure. 3:35 The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life, and he who does not believe the Son will not see life, but the anger of God stays on him. 4:1 As soon as the LORD had knowledge of how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 4:2 (Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,) 4:3 He left Judaea and went again into Galilee. 4:4 And it was so that he had need to go through Samaria. 4:5 Then he came to a city of Samaria, Sychar, beside the possession that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 4:6 And there was Jacob's well. Jesus, then wearied by his journey, sat on the well. And it was about the sixth hour. 4:7 And there, a woman of Samaria came to draw water. And Jesus said to her, Give me a drink. 4:8 (Because his disciples had gone away to the town to buy food.) 4:9 Then the woman of Samaria said to him, How is it that you, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan? (Because the Jews do not meddle with the Samaritans.) 4:10 Jesus answered to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who said to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given the water of life. 4:11 The woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep, from where, then, have you water of life? 4:12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and himself drank from it, and his children, and his cattle? 4:13 Jesus answered, Whoever drinks this water will thirst again, 4:14 But whoever will drink of the water that I will give him will never more be thirsty, but the water that I will give him will be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 4:15 The woman said to him, Sir, give me from that water, so I do not thirst, and neither come here to draw. 4:16 Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. 4:17 The woman said, I have no husband. (4:18) Jesus said to her, You have well said, I have no husband, Because you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband. That, you said truly. 4:19 The woman said to him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 4:21 Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you will neither in this mountain, nor still in Jerusalem worship the Father. 4:22 You worship you know not what; we know what we worship. Because salvation is of the Jews. 4:23 But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For truly, the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 4:24 God is a Spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 4:25 The woman said to him, I know well that a Messiah shall come, who is called Christ. When he comes, he will tell us all things. 4:26 Jesus said to her, I who speaks to you am he. 4:27 And at that point, his disciples came and they were amazed that he talked with the woman. Still, no one said to him, What do you mean? or Why do you talk with her? 4:28 The woman then left her water pot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men, 4:29 Come, see a man who told me all things that ever I did. Is he not Christ? 4:30 Then they went out of the city, and came to him. 4:31 And meanwhile, his disciples begged him, saying, Master, eat. 4:32 But he said to them, I have food to eat that you do not know about. 4:33 Then the disciples said one to another, Has any man brought him food? 4:34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work. 4:35 Say not, There are still four months, and then comes harvest? Look: I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. 4:36 And he who harvests receives wages, and gathers fruit to eternal life, so both he who plants and he who harvests may rejoice together. 4:37 And in this, the saying is true, that, One plants, and another harvests. 4:38 I sent you to harvest that which you gave no labor. Other men labored and you have entered into their labors. 4:39 Many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him, because of the saying of the woman who testified, He told me all that I ever did. 4:40 Then when the Samaritans had come to him, they begged him to remain with them. And he stayed there for two days. 4:41 And many more believed because of his own words, 4:42 And said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of your saying, because we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed Christ, the Savior of the world. 4:43 After two days, he left there, and went into Galilee. 4:44 And Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 4:45 Then as soon as he had come into Galilee, those Galilaeans received him who had seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast, because they also went to the feast day. 4:46 And Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he turned water into wine. And there was a ruler whose son was sick at Capernaum. 4:47 As soon as he heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went to him, and asked him if he would come down and heal his son, because he was about to die. 4:48 Then Jesus said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, you cannot believe. 4:49 The ruler said to him, Sir, come down or my child will die. 4:50 Jesus said to him, Go away, your son lives. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken to him, and he went away. 4:51 And as soon as he went away, his servants met him, and told him, Your child lives! 4:52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he began to mend. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 4:53 So the Father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesus said to him, Your son lives, and he believed, and all his household. 4:54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he had come out of Judaea into Galilee. 5:1 After that, there was a feast of the Jews and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 5:2 And there is at Jerusalem by the slaughterhouse a pool, called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 5:3 In which laid a large crowd of sick people: of blind, lame, withered limbs [(waiting for the moving of the water.) (5:4 Because an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and moved the water. Whoever first stepped in after the stirring of the water was made healthy of whatever disease they had.)] 5:5 And a man was there who had been diseased for thirty-eight years. 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been diseased a long time, he said to him, Do you wish to be made healthy? 5:7 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, to put me into the pool when the water is moved. But in the meantime, while I’m about to come down, another steps down in front of me. 5:8 Jesus said to him, Get up, pick up your bed, and walk. 5:9 And immediately the man was made healthy, and picked up his bed, and walked. And this same day was the Sabbath day. 5:10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, It is the Sabbath day, it is not legal for you to carry your bed. 5:11 He answered them, He who made me healthy said to me, Pick up your bed, and go away. 5:12 Then asked they him, What man is this who said to you, Pick up your bed, and walk? 5:13 And he who was healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had gotten himself away, because there was a crowd of people in that place. 5:14 And after that, Jesus found himself in the temple, and said to him, Look! You are made healthy. Sin no more, in case a worse thing happens to you. 5:15 The man left, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him healthy. 5:16 And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought a way to kill him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day. 5:17 And Jesus answered them, My Father works until now, and I work. 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, not only because he had broken the Sabbath, but also said that God was his father, and had made himself equal with God. 5:19 Then Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, The Son can do nothing by himself, except what he sees the Father do. Because whatever he does, that, the Son does, too. 5:20 Because the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things he, himself does. And he will show him greater works than these, because you should be amazed. 5:21 Because in the same way as the Father raises up the dead, and gives life to them, even so, the Son gives life to whom he will. 5:22 Neither does the Father judge any man, but has committed all judgment to the Son, 5:23 Because all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who has sent him. 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, He who hears my word, and believes in him who sent me, has everlasting life, and will not come into damnation, but has escaped from death to life. 5:25 Truly, truly, I say to you, The time will come, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God. And those who hear will live. 5:26 Because as the Father has life in himself, so in the same way has he given to the Son to have life in himself, 5:27 And has given him power to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 5:28 Do not be amazed by this, because the hour will come in the which all who are in the graves will hear his voice, 5:29 And will come out, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation. 5:30 I can of my own self do nothing at all. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the Father, who has sent me. 5:31 If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 5:32 There is another who testifies about me, and I am sure that the testimony which he says about me is true. 5:33 You sent to John, and he testified to the truth. 5:34 But I do not accept the testimony of man. Yet, these things I say, so you might be saved. 5:35 He was a burning and a shining light, and you were willing for a season to have rejoiced in his light. 5:36 But I have greater testimony than the testimony of John, because the works that the Father has given me to finish, those works that I do testify that the Father sent me. 5:37 And the Father himself, who has sent me, testifies about me. You have not heard his voice at any time, nor have you seen his shape. 5:38 But his words have not remained in you. Because you do not believe whom he has sent. 5:39 Search the scriptures, because in them, you think you have eternal life, and the scriptures are what testify about me. 5:40 And you will not come to me, so you might have life. 5:41 I do not accept praise from men. 5:42 But I know you, and that you do not have the love of God in you. 5:43 I have come in my Father's name, and you did not accept me. If another will come in his own name, him you will accept. 5:44 How can you believe, who accepts honors from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes only from God? 5:45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, Moses, in whom you trust. 5:46 Because if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me. 5:47 But now that you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?
