The Gospel According to Luke in the Abbott ePublishing Tyndale21 Version of the Holy Bible (© Copyright 2011 Abbott ePublishing. And he went into the temple of the Lord, 1:10 And the whole crowd of the people were praying outside while the incense was burning. 1:11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 1:12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was very terrified, and fear came over him. 1:13 But the angel said to him, Do not be afraid, Zacharias, because for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elisabeth will give birth to a son, and you will call him John. 1:14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 1:15 Because he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and will drink neither wine nor strong drink. And he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even in his mother's womb. 1:16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 1:17 And he will come before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the unbelievers to the wisdom of the just, to make the people ready for the Lord. 1:18 And Zacharias said to the angel, How will I know this? Seeing that I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years. 1:19 And the angel answered, I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and was sent to speak to you, and to show you this good news. 1:20 And, Look! You will be dumb, and not able to speak until the day that these things are performed, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season. 1:21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and were amazed that he waited in the temple. 1:22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, And so they knew that he had seen some vision in the temple. And he motioned to them, and remained speechless. 1:23 And as soon as his time in office was over, he departed home to his own house. 1:24 And after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 1:25 In this way, the Lord dealt with me in the days when he looked on me, to take away the insults that I suffered among men. 1:26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 1:27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 1:28 And the angel came in to her, and entering, said, Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. 1:29 And when she saw him, she was very troubled at his words, and threw thoughts around in her mind about what kind of greeting this was. 1:30 And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary: because you have found favor with God. 1:31 And, Look, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name JESUS. 1:32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 1:33 And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and there will be no end to his kingdom. 1:34 Then said Mary to the angel, How will this be, since I have not been with a man? 1:35 And the angel answered her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you, therefore also that holy thing which will be born of you will be called the Son of God. 1:36 And, Look, your cousin Elisabeth, she has also conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month, although she was called sterile. 1:37 For with God, nothing can be impossible. 1:38 And Mary said, Look, the servant of the Lord; may it happen to me just as you have said. And the angel departed from her. 1:39 And Mary got up in those days, and quickly went into the hill country, into a city of Judah, 1:40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 1:41 And it happened that when Elisabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby jumped in her womb, and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 1:42 And cried in a loud voice, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 1:43 And how did this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 1:44 For, see, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the baby jumped with joy in my womb. 1:45 And blessed are you who believed, for those things will be performed which were told to you by the Lord. 1:46 And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, 1:47 And my spirit has rejoices in God, my Savior. 1:48 For he has looked on the poor status of his servant. Look, from now on all generations will call me blessed. 1:49 For he who is mighty has done to me great things; and holy is his name. 1:50 And his mercy is on those who fear him throughout all generations. 1:51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in the imagination of their hearts. 1:52 He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted the humble. 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things; and has sent away the rich empty. 1:54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 1:55 Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his children forever. 1:56 And Mary stayed with her about three months, and returned to her own house. 1:57 Now Elisabeth's time to be delivered had come, and she gave birth to a son. 1:58 And her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy to her; and they rejoiced with her. 1:59 And it happened that on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after his father. 1:60 But his mother said, Not so; he will be called John. 1:61 And they said to her, There is none of your family that is called by this name. 1:62 And they made signs to his father, asking what he wanted to name him. 1:63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, His name is John. And they were all amazed. 1:64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue was released, and he spoke, praised God. 1:65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judaea. 1:66 And all those who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child will this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, 1:68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he has visited and redeemed his people, 1:69 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 1:70 As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who have been since the world began, 1:71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 1:72 To fulfill the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 1:73 And to perform the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, 1:74 That he would grant to us, that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 1:75 All the days of our life, in such holiness and righteousness that are acceptable in his sight. 1:76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest: for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 1:77 To give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins, 1:78 Through the tender mercy of our God, by which the daybreak from on high has visited us, 1:79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. 1:80 And the boy grew, and grew strong in spirit, and was in the deserts until the day of his showing to the Israelites. 2:1 And it happened in those days, that there went out a command from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 2:2 And this first taxing was made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 2:3 And everyone went to his own city to be taxed. 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of a city called Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David.) 2:5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, who was pregnant. 2:6 And it happened that while they were there, the time had come that she should deliver. 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them inside in the inn. 2:8 And there were in the same region shepherds who stayed in the field to keep watch over their flock at night. 2:9 And, Look, the angel of the Lord was standing next to them, and the brightness of the Lord shined all around them, and they were very afraid. 2:10 And the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, because Look, I bring you good news of great joy, which will come to all people. 2:11 For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 2:12 And this as a sign: You will find the child wrapped and laid in a manger. 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a plethora of heavenly soldiers praising God, and saying, 2:14 Glory to God on high and peace on earth, and to men, rejoicing. 2:15 And it happened that as soon as the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us now go to Bethlehem, and see this thing has happened which the Lord has shown to us. 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby laid in a manger. 2:17 And when they had seen it, they preached abroad the sayings that were told them concerning the child. 2:18 And all who heard it wondered at the things that were told to them by the shepherds. 2:19 But Mary kept all these sayings, and pondered them in her heart. 2:20 And the shepherds returned, praising and glorifying God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told to them. 2:21 And when the eighth day had come, and the child would be circumcised, he was named JESUS - who was named by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 2:22 And when the time of her purification according to the law of Moses had come, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 2:23 (As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that first opens the womb will be called holy to the Lord;) 2:24 And to offer (as it is said in the law of the Lord) a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 2:25 And, Look, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon. And the same man was just and feared God and longed for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was in him. 2:26 And an answer was given to him by the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 2:27 And he came by inspiration into the temple, and when the father and mother brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 2:28 Then took he him up in his arms, blessed God, and said, 2:29 Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your promise, 2:30 For my eyes have seen the salvation sent from you, 2:31 Which you have prepared before the face of all people; 2:32 A light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your people, Israel. 2:33 And Joseph and his mother were amazed at these things which were spoken of him. 2:34 And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Look, this child will be the fall and resurrection of many in Israel, and a sign who will be spoken against. 2:35 And further, a sword will pass through your own soul also, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 2:36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 2:37 Now she was a widow of about eighty-four years old who did not leave the temple, but served God with fasting and prayers night and day. 2:38 And she came out that same hour and praised the Lord, and spoke about him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 2:39 And as soon as they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 2:40 And the child grew, and grew strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was with him. 2:41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. 2:42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 2:43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned home, the child Jesus still remained in Jerusalem, and his father and mother did not know of it. 2:44 Because they supposed he had been in their group, and therefore a day’s journey went by, and they sought him among their family and acquaintances. 2:45 And when they did not find him, they turned back again to Jerusalem, to look for him. 2:46 And after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the doctors, both hearing them, and posing them questions. 2:47 And all who heard him were astonished at his wisdom and answers. 2:48 And when they saw him, they were amazed, and his mother said to him, Son, why have you dealt with us in this way? See, your father and I have sought you sorrowing. 2:49 And he said to them, How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must go about my Father's business? 2:50 And they did not understood the saying that he spoke to them. 2:51 And he went with them, and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them, but his mother kept all these things in her heart. 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and age, and in favor with God and man. 3:1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 3:2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the desert. 3:3 And he came into all the region around the Jordan River, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, 3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of a crier in the desert, Prepare you the roads of the Lord, make his highways straight. 3:5 Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill will be brought low; and the crooked will be made straight, and the rough roads will be made smooth, 3:6 And all flesh will see the salvation by God. 3:7 Then he said to the people who had come out to be baptized by him, Oh, generation of snakes, who has warned you to escape from the anger to come? 3:8 Produce, then, fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say within yourselves: We have Abraham as our father. Because I say: God is able to raise up children of Abraham out of these stones. 3:9 And now the ax is laid to the root of the trees, so that every tree which does not produce good fruit is cut down, and throw into the fire. 3:10 And the people asked him, saying, What will we do then? 3:11 He said to them, He who has two coats, let him divide the two and give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do the same. 3:12 Then tax collectors came to be baptized, and said to him, Master, what should we be doing? 3:13 And he said to them, Require no more than that which is appointed you. 3:14 And the soldiers also demanded of him, What should we do? And he said to them, Do not intimidate any man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages. 3:15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men disputed within their hearts about John, asking whether he was the Christ, or not; 3:16 John answered, saying to them all, I baptize you with water; but one stronger than I comes, the lace of whose shoes I am not worthy to untie, he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire, 3:17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with fire that will never be put out. 3:18 And he preached many other things to the people. 3:19 Then Herod the tetrarch, having been publicly corrected by John for Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils Herod had done, 3:20 Added yet this above all, and put John into prison. 3:21 Now it happened that as all the people had received baptism, Jesus was baptized and prayed, and the heaven was opened, 3:22 And the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily shape like a dove on him, and a voice came from heaven saying, You are my dear son. In you I am delighted! 3:23 And Jesus himself was about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli, 3:24 Who was the son of Matthat, who was the son of Levi, who was the son of Melchi, who was the son of Janna, who was the son of Joseph, 3:25 Who was the son of Mattathias, who was the son of Amos, who was the son of Naum, who was the son of Esli, who was the son of Nagge, 3:26 Who was the son of Maath, who was the son of Mattathias, who was the son of Semei, who was the son of Joseph, who was the son of Judah, 3:27 Who was the son of Joanna, who was the son of Rhesa, who was the son of Zorobabel, who was the son of Salathiel, who was the son of Neri, 3:28 Who was the son of Melchi, who was the son of Addi, who was the son of Cosam, who was the son of Elmodam, who was the son of Er, 3:29 Who was the son of Jose, who was the son of Eliezer, who was the son of Jorim, who was the son of Matthat, who was the son of Levi, 3:30 Who was the son of Simeon, who was the son of Judah, who was the son of Joseph, who was the son of Jonan, who was the son of Eliakim, 3:31 Who was the son of Melea, who was the son of Menan, who was the son of Mattatha, who was the son of Nathan, who was the son of David, 3:32 Who was the son of Jesse, who was the son of Obed, who was the son of Booz, who was the son of Salmon, who was the son of Naasson, 3:33 Who was the son of Aminadab, who was the son of Aram, who was the son of Esrom, who was the son of Phares, who was the son of Judah, 3:34 Who was the son of Jacob, who was the son of Isaac, who was the son of Abraham, who was the son of Thara, who was the son of Nachor, 3:35 Who was the son of Saruch, who was the son of Ragau, who was the son of Phalec, who was the son of Heber, who was the son of Sala, 3:36 Who was the son of Cainan, who was the son of Arphaxad, who was the son of Sem, who was the son of Noah, who was the son of Lamech, 3:37 Who was the son of Mathusala, who was the son of Enoch, who was the son of Jared, who was the son of Maleleel, who was the son of Cainan, 3:38 Who was the son of Enos, who was the son of Seth, who was the son of Adam, who was the son of God. 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Spirit, returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the desert, 4:2 And was for forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he ate nothing: and when they were ended, he afterwards hungry. 4:3 And the devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it become bread. 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man will not live by only bread, but by every word of God. 4:5 And the devil took him up onto a high mountain and showed to him all the kingdoms of the world in the blink of an eye. 4:6 And the devil said to him, All this power will I give you, and every bit of the glory of them, because it was delivered to me, and to whomever I wish to give it. 4:7 So, if you will worship me, they will be yours. 4:8 And Jesus answered to him, Away from me, Satan! Because it is written, You will worship the Lord your God, and only him will you serve. 4:9 And he carried him to Jerusalem, and set him up on a pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 4:10 Because it is written, He will give his angels control over you, to protect you, 4:11 And in their hands they will lift you up, so you will not hit your foot against a stone. 4:12 And Jesus answering said to him, It is said, You will not tempt the Lord your God. 4:13 As soon as the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. 4:14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and from there went the fame of him throughout all the region. 4:15 And he taught in their synagogues, and was commended by all men. 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and, as was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 4:17 And there was delivered to him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are bruised, 4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 4:20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all those who were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 4:21 And he began to say to them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 4:22 And all witnessed this, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? 4:23 And he said to them, You may very truly tell me this proverb, Doctor, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard that was done in Capernaum, do also here in your country. 4:24 And he said, Truly I say to you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. 4:25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 4:26 But to none of them was Elijah sent, except to Zarephath, a city of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 4:27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman of Syria. 4:28 And as many as were in the synagogue, when they heard him, were furious, 4:29 And they stood up, and threw him out of the city, and led him to the top of the hill on which their city had been built, so they could push him over it. 4:30 But he walked right through the middle of them and went away. 4:31 And he went into Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days. 4:32 And they were astonished at his teachings, because preaching was powerful. 4:33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and cried out with a loud voice, 4:34 Saying, Leave us alone; what do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are, the Holy One of God. 4:35 And Jesus angrily scolded him, saying, Be quiet and come out of him. And when the demon had thrown him into the middle of the room, he came out of him, and did not hurt him. 4:36 And they were all awestruck by this, and spoke among themselves, saying, What words are these? With authority and power, he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out. 4:37 And news went out about him into every part of the region. 4:38 And he stood up and came out of the synagogue, and entered Simon's house. And Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a great fever, and they sought his help for her. 4:39 And he stood over her, and yelled at the fever; and it left her, and immediately she stood up and served them. 4:40 At sunset, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 4:41 And demons also came out of many of them crying out, You are Christ the Son of God. And he yelled at them and did not allow them to speak, because they knew he was Christ. 4:42 As soon as it was daylight, he left and went into a deserted place. But the people looked for him, and came to him. And they detained him, so he could not leave them. 4:43 And he said to them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for this reason I was sent. 4:44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. 5:1 And it happened that as the people pressed close to him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 5:2 And saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen were not in them, and were washing their nets. 5:3 And he entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him if he would push the boat out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the boat. 5:4 Now when he had stopped speaking, he said to Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch. 5:5 And Simon answering said to him, Master, we have worked all night, and have taken in nothing. Still, on your word, I will let down the net. 5:6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a great number of fish. And their net broke. 5:7 And they signaled to their partners, which were in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Lord, leave me, because I am a sinful man. 5:9 He was utterly astonished, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish they had taken, 5:10 And so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men. 5:11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they abandoned everything, and followed him. 5:12 And it happened that when he was in a certain city, a man full of leprosy came and, when he saw Jesus, fell on his face, and begged him, Lord, if you want to, you can make me healthy. 5:13 And he put out his hand, and touched him, saying, I want you to be healthy. And immediately the leprosy left him. 5:14 And he warned him to tell no one, but that he should go, and show himself to the priest, and make and offering for his healing, according as Moses’ commanded, as a witness to them. 5:15 But news spread abroad about him, and many people came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their sicknesses. 5:16 And he kept himself apart in the desert, and prayed. 5:17 And one day, as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was there to heal them. 5:18 And, Look, men brought a paralyzed man in a cot, and they sought a way to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 5:19 And when they could not find a way they might bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the top of the house, and let him down through the tiling, bed and all, into the middle of the room, in front of Jesus. 5:20 And when he saw their faith, he said to him, Man, your sins are forgiven. 5:21 And the Scribes and the Pharisees began to think, saying, What man is this who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 5:22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he said to them, What do you think in your hearts? 5:23 Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you, or to say, Get up and walk? 5:24 But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, (he said to the paralyzed man,) I say to you, Stand up, and take up your cot, and go home. 5:25 And immediately he stood up before them, and picked up the cot on which he had been laying, and went to his own house, praising God. 5:26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things today. 5:27 And after these things he went out, and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs booth. And he said to him, Follow me. 5:28 And he left all, stood up, and followed him. 5:29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house. And there was a great number of tax collectors and others who sat at dinner with them. 5:30 But their Scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? 5:31 And Jesus said to them, Those who are healthy do not need a doctor, just those who are sick. 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 5:33 Then they said to him, Why do the disciples of John often fast, and make prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. But yours eat and drink? 5:34 And he said to them, Can you make the children at a wedding fast, while the groom is with them? 5:35 But the days will come, when the groom will be taken away from them, and then will they fast in those days. 5:36 And he told them a parable, No man puts a piece of new cloth on an old article of clothing, because if he does, he rips the new one and the piece that was taken out of the new one doesn’t fit with the old one. 5:37 Also, no man puts new wine into old bottles. Because if he does, the new wine breaks the bottles and runs out and the bottles are destroyed. 5:38 But new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved. 5:39 No man also having drunk old wine immediately desires new: for he said, The old is more pleasant.
