Short
Journeys: Flash Fiction by Stephen Abbott Short Journeys is a remarkably
versatile collection of flash
fiction stories featuring strange abilities, and how the protagonists
deal with them, stories
of the paranormal and otherworldly, time travel, and (a favorite
subject of the author) people who can live for an extraordinarily long
time (hint: it’s not as much of a blessing as one would think.)
You’ll also be treated to a mystery for you to solve and more than a
few that plumb the
depths of human terror.
Most of these 18 works are “Flash Fiction” stories, here defined as
constituting stories of either exactly 500 or 750 words in length.
But as a bonus, a short-short story, The Cell, is included an appendix.
It is a bit longer than the others, and is set to be adapted into an
upcoming novel.
We hope you enjoy this collection, the first fiction selection by
Stephen Abbott, published exclusively
by Abbott ePublishing.

"Grandfather and the Raven is a marvelous collection of
heart-warming stories.Each

Paul Bauck
“Grandfather and the Raven’ is a
delightful collection of life fables. They are distilled wisdom
that warms you all the way down. leaving you looking forward to
another reading in the future.” - Jean Sullivan, Seattle "I just
finished reading your book 'Grandfather and the Raven.'Very creative, full of
wisdom and simply a pleasure to read!I almost finished it in one
go as it was very interesting and I didn't feel like putting it down
before finishing! I'm glad that you label your stories as 'suitable for
all ages' It then doesn't embarrass us elders who love children's
stories ;-) Thank you so much for making my day by providing me a book
that rejuvenated me :-)” - Author Meam Wye, shininghistory.com
"Speaking as a parent, it is
always a delight when something I would regard as more wholesome than
constant Japanese-based cartoon battling succeeds in entrancing my
children as well. George
Polley’s ‘Grandfather & The Raven’
tales...are suffused with a gentle knowingness and humour
accompanied
by a sharp disapproval of unprovoked violence (violent dogs, violent
people, war). There is also a cannily and wryly portrayed running
description of the relationship between the old man and his wife which
serves to add welcome dabs of wasabi to the concoction. These tales are both
freely flowing and naturally quirky, and clearly not targeted at
a neatly-defined market segment nor containing artificial
story-enhancer additives." Tim Roux, author, Belgium

"Reviews:
“I found [it] perfectly
accessible because its subject matter is
authors of speculative fiction as well as a few creators in other
related media. I took a peek inside to see what was there, and just
kept reading it all the way through. Green has endeavored to capture in
a few words the essence of the worlds that these writers created. Each
poem is simply titled in the style of “Bester’s World,” “Heinlein’s
World,” “Lovecraft’s World,” and so on. Each one could serve as a
poetic, and sometimes enigmatic answer to the question “what made this
author tick?” - Christopher Fletcher, M-BRANE
blog
"Exquisite
craftsmanship." - Karen L. Newman, The
Black Glove Blog
"I did not recognize everybody he wrote about which was good in a way
because those people I can search for and so far it has been surprising
and interesting what things they were a part of that I have enjoyed. Now I can put a face with
the shows or the books I have read that I never had before, and
while the knowledge maybe trivial it is nice in a way to know about
those people." - The
Death Head Grin blog.
"With Private Worlds: A Revised Atlas, Scott E. Green has
assembled a list of favourite names that it is very difficult to argue
against. ... Anyone who is familiar with Lovecraft and Lieber
will hear the slither of tentacles, or smell the streets Lankhmar." -
Edward Cox, in the Sept/Oct. issue of Star*Line.

The Old
Man and the Monkey by George Polley
"In a small park near one of the rivers in
Asahikawa, Hokkaido, there is a bronze statue of an old man and a
monkey seated side by side on a broad flat stone looking out over the
river and the mountains. The monkey is bigger than ordinary snow
monkeys; the top of his head reaches to the old man's shoulder. Looking
at the bags under his eyes, one can see that the monkey, like the man,
is elderly. Affixed to the base of the statue is a bronze plaque that
reads: 'Genjiro and Yukitaro'. These two old friends sit and warm
themselves in silence as the years and seasons pass."
So begins the story of a friendship between an old man and a monkey.
Told with humor and understanding, "The Old Man and The Monkey" appeals
to all ages.
Here is what author Thom Rutledge says about it: "I was immediately
drawn to The Old Man and The Monkey! Wow! Nothing short of
monkey
magic. Excellent work. Beu-tee-ful!"
